Retail Sales Boosted by Weather, Easter Shift; Gap, TJX Surprise

Retail stores posted strong same-store sales in March, as warm weather helped spur spring clothing sales and an earlier Easter gave consumers another reason to shop. Excluding pharmacies, companies that reported their results said sales grew 6.8% at stores open more than a year, “well above the monthly same-store gains of 3% to 5% recorded throughout 2011,” according to Thomson Reuters.

Wall St Ends Lower For Worst Week of 2012

A boon for US retailers, demand for the latest fashion trends is typically strong in the lead-up to the weekend’s Easter holidays, even as goods are still sold at full price, said Jharonne Martis, director of research at Thomson Reuters. Significantly warmer weather in March throughout the US also helped boost pent-up demand for spring clothing, he said.
